GENDER; HOUSE AND HOMES
Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

2022

My response to a brief curated by Gina Mcdonald, exploring the ways I deal with the topics of ‘gender’ and ‘home’. Being a non-binary textile artist I wanted to display my identity alongside the typically feminine craft of textiles. The final stitched pieces reflect the textile darning samplers which were created throughout the 18th century by young women to demonstrate their sewing skills. This was typically done visibly but when reproducing this repair work to physical garments it would be hidden. I took this idea and translated my gender identity through stitch and visible darning whilst also introducing biomaterials.
